Galway selected as European Capital of Culture in 2020

On Friday July 15 2016, the selection panel of independent experts responsible for assessing the competing Irish cities recommended that Galway should be awarded the title European Capital of Culture in 2020. Galway will jointly hold the honour with Rijeka in Croatia.

The process started in December 2014, when applications from interested cities in Ireland were invited. Three cities had been short-listed after the initial pre-selection round in November 2015: Galway, Limerick and Waterford for the Three Sisters (Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford).

You can view the planned programme of events in the winning bid book ‘Making Waves’.

The programme must have a lasting impact and contribute to the long-term development of the city. Galway built its bid around the three themes of Language, Landscape and Migration, which have wider relevance to the west of Ireland as well as throughout Europe.
