Beautiful, practical and useful handmade bags created in West Clare from recycled jeans and gloriously coloured showerproof fabrics
Sallyann’s Handmade Bags have been created in a small sewing room overlooking Doo Lough and the Atlantic Ocean near Miltown Malbay in West Clare, Ireland, by their creator, Sallyann Marron since September 2014. In November 2015, Sallyann’s Handmade Bags won a Silver Award in the Bank Of Ireland Start Up Awards.
The bags are individual creations, combining high quality showerproof fabrics from around the world with recycled jeans, making every bag unique. The bags are hugely practical, designed for use everyday. They have strong zip or magnetic snap closures, easy access patch pockets inside, and the clever addition of a key clip inside to ensure your keys never go astray.
The designs are simple, useful, practical and beautiful. Each bag is made to the highest quality standards to ensure it is long lasting and will not let its owner down. They are a winning combination of recycled and new fabrics, and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
I sell the bags through craft markets and selected craft shops in Ireland. In 2016 I have also sold at events in Sweden and the UK. The bags are available internationally via my own online shop, through Handmade at Amazon in both the US and UK and Etsy.
I design the bags from the basis of usability and practicality first and foremost. All the bags have to work and be fit for purpose. Outer fabrics are showerproof to cope with the vagaries of the weather, and it also makes them resistant to spillages from liquids like tea and coffee. I select fabrics that are bright, colourful and unusual, and spend a great deal of time sourcing fabrics from companies across Europe, paying particular attention to ensuring that they are made in as environmentally friendly way as possible.
I use recycled denim for the linings because it is a strong lining that is resistant to tears and rips. Even expensive branded bags are often lined with cheap nylon lining fabric that rips or tears easily, especially as you put keys or pens into the bag. With a denim lining, this will not happen because it is a much stronger fabric. It is also a heavy gauge of fabric, so it helps to give the bags a strong structure too. Because I can only get a maximum of two bags out of each pair of jeans, it means that each bag is a unique combination of outer fabric and denim.
I make shoulder straps and the straps used to attached the inside key clip from the denim too, and these provide a strong yet soft strap. The key clips also ensure that even in a small bag, your keys are always easily accessible. Zips from the jeans are reused to make purses.
By paying so much attention to the form and function of my designs, I have created a recognisable brand and a loyal following amongst my customers.
