Adele Pound

I am a wildlife artist and keen birdwatcher. I work in a number of mediums such as acrylic, watercolour, drawing and collage and cut paper as well as digitally. I exhibit in both solo and group shows throughout the UK and Ireland.

I consider myself fortunate to live in Northern Ireland where we are visited by birds from as far north as the arctic circle and as far south as Africa and south America. This seasonal coming and going has be part of life and culture here for as long as there have been people to witness it. I am just the latest in a long line of “watchers”. The birds likewise are the latest in generations that go back into the far distant past.

Fieldwork and drawing from life is central to my practice. This is both a creative endeavour in itself and a way of generating resource material to refer to once back in the studio. Studying birds in their natural habitat is a crucial process which helps me understand the subtleties of mannerism and behaviour of different species and the ways in which they react with their environment. Although I also use photographs and other reference material,it is this work done in the field that is the most valuable and which drives the ideas for developing new work.

In 2016 I was lucky enough to be selected as one of a diverse group of 12 artists to take part in the Copeland Art Project. This took the form of a weekend residency on Lighthouse Island as the guests of the Copeland Bird Observatory. This was followed by 3 group shows in different venues throughout the summer. This group will be coming together again in the Autumn of 2017 to collaborate on a fourth exhibition.

Across all the disciplines I work in, my aim is to inspire the viewer and engage them with the natural world all around them. To this end I often choose subjects with a local resonance. Examples of this include urban wildlife in Belfast city centre. or, more recently, the ephemeral inter-tidal landscape of Strangford Lough. I am currently carrying out research for more extended works with a narrative content.
